DAUGHTERS OF ZION HISTORY
After traveling to central California for several years to attend the Women’s Spiritual Koinonia (organized by L.J. Hughes, Sable Hughes and Ella Tolliver and held at the time at Soquel Conference Center) it was determined by two sisters, Jean Anderson and Brenda Goodridge, that the need was great to have a centralized retreat that was administered by the Minority women here in the Pacific Northwest.
Brenda and Jean recalled that the Breath of Life Seventh Day Adventist church in Seattle had conducted a successful retreat for their women just that spring at Rainbow Lodge. It was well received. After coming together in prayer, Jean and Brenda decided to invite dyAnne Williams, who had just relocated to the Pacific Northwest from California, to join them in planning the first retreat in the fall of 1998.
Brenda presented us this scripture from Zechariah 9:9: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; he is just and endowed with salvation.” After a time of prayer around Jean’s kitchen table in Mountlake Terrace, the name Daughters of Zion was decided upon. dyAnne was chosen to be the first president to lead the planning committee

Since 1998 Daughters of Zion Ministries has held an annual weekend conference for women from all denominations, ethnic backgrounds and ages. The first 3 retreats were held at Camp Berachah in Auburn, WA. Since then most our retreats have been held at Rainbow Lodge Retreat Center in North Bend, WA.
Our early years were focused primarily on a yearly weekend retreat for the women. We gather for singing, seminars, testifying, fun and fellowship. It is prayerfully planned for the purpose of strengthening the sisterhood. We encourage the women to return to their respective churches and continue the ministry in their home churches.
Through God’s blessing and guidance Daughters of Zion has continued to bless and encourage women to know God’s love and care regardless of their circumstances.
Over the years, several women have been baptized as a result of the retreats, and many women have reclaimed their faith. Women of the Daughters of Zion Ministries have been active in Community Service, Social Advocacy and Foreign mission trips just to name a few..
Through the years we have been blessed with caring women on our board.. Our former board members include dyAnne Williams, Brenda Goodridge, Joyce Washington, Wilma Alcott, Renee Williams, Joyce Southall, Tina Cooper, Angela Butler, Chantey Reid, Michelle Alston , ,,,,,,,,,,We would not have been a success without their help.
We appreciate the help of our families and spouses who have supported our efforts. Especially, Ron Anderson who has been our number 1 retreat brochure designer.
We appreciate the support provided by the sisterhood of churches.in the North Pacific and most of all, we especially Pastor Alfonzo McCarthy. With his support in allowing us to advertise at convocation, his financial encouragement and verbal guidance the Daughters of Zion have been able to fulfill God’s purpose.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Women are encouraged to accept their responsibility as women of God who will offer themselves as living sacrifices, acceptable and pleasing to God; be devoted to one another in love, honoring one another above themselves; serve God and their church with zeal, keeping their spiritual fervor; joyfully hope; be patient in affliction and faithful in prayer; share with God’s people who are in need; and practice hospitality. The verses found in Romans 12:1, 10-13 are the foundations for these aspirations. Women are also encouraged to be committed to teaching the younger women, as outlined in Titus 2:4.
Acts of the Apostles, page 507, says:
“What the church needs in these days of peril is an army of workers who, like Paul, have educated themselves for usefulness, who have a deep experience in the things of God, and who are filled with earnestness and zeal. Sanctified, self-sacrificing women who are brave and true; women in whose hearts Christ is formed the ‘hope of glory’, and who with lips touched with holy fire will ‘preach the word’. For want of such women the cause of God languishes and fatal errors, like deadly poison, taint the morals and blight the hopes of a large part of the human race.”
